• Framingham represents Genzyme’s largest concentration of employees worldwide with more than 1,800 employees located in 14 buildings on the campus.

• At the Science Center, Genzyme is participating in the Labs21 program, sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The goal of the program is to improve the environmental performance of US laboratories.

• Genzyme is seeking to establish this facility as the first scientific research laboratory to receive certification under the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Rating System™.

Genzyme's highest priority is expanding and improving its manufacturing so that it can provide patients with adequate and reliable supplies of Cerezyme® and Fabrazyme®. Its newest manufacturing facility in Framingham, Mass – which is expected to come on line in 2011 – is central to this effort.
This new 250,000-square-foot facility will help Genzyme meet the growing global demand for its products. Next door to the plant, construction continues on the second stage of the development plan for the facility – a 180,000 square foot administrative and lab building. Scheduled for completion in summer 2011, it will house manufacturing and support offices as well as the Quality Control laboratories for the site. The goal is to consolidate about 550 of the site's employees, now located in five locations across Framingham, into a central location. In keeping with Genzyme's commitment to "green" design, the building will feature energy savings, water efficiency, and high-quality indoor air. It is expected to receive LEED gold certification.

• The expansion of the Allston facility will increase employment by 25 percent.

• Genzyme has received gold certification for the facility expansion under the US Green Building Council's LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™.

Allston Landing is Genzyme's premier protein manufacturing facility. Here, more than 400 employees work around the clock, 365 days a year to produce five life-saving medicines– Cerezyme®, Fabrazyme®, Myozyme®, Aldurazyme®, and Thyrogen®–that are delivered to patients in more than 100 countries.
The substantial growth in manufacturing has led to the need for greater space for manufacturing support operations, offices and mechanical equipment. As a result, in 2007, Genzyme broke ground to expand the existing Allston facility. This expansion will incorporate environmentally responsible building practices similar to those used at Genzyme Center, the company's Cambridge headquarters, and its new Science Center in Framingham.
